Sure, the change in weather is exciting, but snow, wind, and ice are all seriously unpleasant to deal with after a few weeks. For diabetics, winter also brings additional problems that can affect their health. You’d be surprised at how quickly the cold can start bringing you down and this time of year is coming up fast, so let’s take a look at how you can prepare!
#1 Stock Up On Lotion
The air is much drier during the winter so it can suck the moisture from your skin faster. Since diabetics are already prone to dry skin, this can make the problem seem much worse. Get lotions for the bathroom, the bedroom, your purse, and the car. It should be fragrance-free and hypoallergenic to keep from irritating your dry, cracked skin. Make sure to use your lotions multiple times during the day to stay hydrated.
#2 Protect Your Feet
Diabetics with neuropathy problems should always be careful about their feet, but try to be more aware of them in winter. Extreme heat isn’t the only thing that can damage your skin and feet! You’ll want to wear clean, dry socks and sturdy, water-resistant boots when outside. Also, check your feet as soon as you come inside for frostbite. Walk carefully too! You might not realize how slippery it is outside until you fall.
#3 Get the Flu Shot
Those with compromised immune systems, like diabetics, should also get the flu shot unless their doctor says otherwise. It is harder to fight off the flu bug when you have diabetes. Being sick can mess with your blood sugar levels, which may already be elevated due to the simple fact that it is winter! Yep, diabetic’s A1C levels are consistently higher in winter than in summer.
